Global Ehsan Relief Sri Lanka (GER-SL) has initiated the Latrines Project as part of its mission to improve sanitation and hygiene in rural and underserved areas across the country. Access to proper sanitation facilities is a critical issue in many impoverished communities, where open defecation and inadequate waste management can lead to the spread of diseases and contamination of water sources. GER-SL’s Latrines Project addresses these challenges by constructing safe, hygienic, and sustainable latrines for families and communities in need.
The latrines built by GER-SL are designed with local conditions in mind, ensuring they are both durable and easy to maintain. These facilities are constructed using high-quality materials to withstand harsh weather conditions and are equipped with features like proper ventilation and handwashing stations. GER-SL also ensures that the latrines are built in strategic locations, providing easy access for families while ensuring that they do not pose a threat to nearby water sources, such as wells and rivers.
In addition to constructing the latrines, GER-SL actively involves the community in the project, promoting awareness about the importance of sanitation and hygiene. Educational programs are conducted to teach families how to maintain the latrines properly and the critical role sanitation plays in preventing the spread of diseases like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. By educating communities, GER-SL aims to promote long-term behavioral changes that improve overall public health.
The Latrines Project has had a significant impact on the health and dignity of the communities it serves. With access to clean, safe latrines, families are able to practice better hygiene, reducing the risk of disease and creating a healthier living environment. GER-SL’s commitment to providing these essential facilities has improved the quality of life for countless individuals, supporting broader efforts in poverty alleviation, health promotion, and community development across Sri Lanka.
